When should asbestos testing happen?

Before renovation, demolition or repair work disturbs suspect materials, and after damage events that may have already disturbed them. Testing first lets the work be planned properly.

Where is asbestos commonly found?

In older construction it may appear in floor tile and adhesive, wall and ceiling texture, insulation, roofing, siding and cement products. The U.S. EPA publishes general guidance for property owners at epa.gov/asbestos.

Can I collect my own sample?

We do not recommend it and we do not provide DIY instructions. Disturbing suspect material can release fibres. Our team collects samples with appropriate controls.

Should lead testing be done at the same time?

Often it makes sense. Buildings old enough to contain asbestos frequently pre-date the 1978 restriction on lead-based paint, so combining the visits can save a second appointment.

What asbestos testing involves

Asbestos was used in a wide range of building products, including flooring, adhesives, wall and ceiling texture, insulation, roofing and cement products. Those materials are generally a concern when they are disturbed, which is why testing usually happens before renovation, demolition or repair work.

S&J Environmental inspects the areas involved in your project, collects samples of suspect materials, and submits them for laboratory analysis. We do not publish sampling instructions for property owners: disturbing suspect material without the right controls is exactly what testing is meant to avoid.
